Contemporary Guwahati city and how we could contribute to the cleanliness and hygiene of the city.

World Air Quality Report by IQAir–a Swiss air quality monitoring group.

Guwahati city is the gateway to the north eastern India and it is one of the biggest metropolitan city in the region. But we are not doing enough to keep this beautiful city as it was 10- 20 years back. It is concerning that the city is named as one of the worst city by Swiss Air quality monitoring group in 2023, when it comes to the hygiene and cleanliness of the city. We as a Guwahatian even if we contribute a little through our one informed decision could bring significance change to the quality of this city.

Once cleaned and hygienic city street footpath where we earlier would go out for walks around our neighbourhood has now turn into a full of dust and garbage. There are several reasons for the deteriorating air quality in the city. However, one of the primary reason is setting up of multiple poultry and fish outlet on each and every street footpath of the city contributing significantly to the air, water and soil pollution. Once we walk around in the neighborhood in fresh air has now turn into a contaminated surroundings makes difficult to even take a proper breath and gives us a tough walk around the city. Our one informed purchasing habits could make a difference in making the city cleaner, greener and healthier and could contribute immensely in improving the atmosphere of the city where we could once again enjoy coming out to the city street enjoying the breeze of fresh air as it used to be 10-20 years back.

Prevailing conditions of the city street and footpath. Some of the photo on city streets and public walking footpath being occupied by contaminated chicken shop immensely contributing to the unhygienic atmosphere in the city. Let us not encourage selling poultry, fish, meat on the street footpath and prefer hygienic meat and fish for our consumption and on the other hand our concious purchasing habits will also contribute a lot in keeping our city surroundings clean and in making our city atmosphere better, fresher and healthier.
